The age at which you are no longer eligible was raised from 70 in December 2016, having been raised from 65 in 1988. ACAS reported that the change was aimed at "making sure the criminal justice system keeps pace with demographic changes in society, including the increasing role that older people are playing in the workplace." The Grauniad quoted Justice Minister Sir Oliver Heald QC: "Trial by jury is a fundamental part of our world–leading justice system and it is important that our juries reflect today's society. People are living longer, healthier lives, so it is right that our courts are able to benefit from the wisdom and experience that older people can offer."
